Galen Scrivner, known by many as “Coach Scriv” passed away on December 20, 2018, at the age of 68. A funeral service will be held on January 5, 2019, at 12:00 PM at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel located at 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker, OR. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Hope Cemetery. A reception will be held immediately following interment at the Baker County Senior Center, 2810 Cedar Street, Baker, OR.
Born and raised in Baker, Oregon; Galen’s fondest memories were those from his childhood. Hunting, fishing, and anything with a ball (baseball, basketball, football, golf) were wonderful activities to be enjoyed often and with others. Accompanied by his father, uncles, cousins and many neighborhood friends; Galen was certainly not alone in his love for sports and outdoor activities. When pressed to choose his favorite sport, Galen was known to say, “whatever is in season, that’s my favorite”.
He studied wildlife biology and math at Oregon State University and obtained his degree from Eastern Oregon State College. After earning his degree, Galen went on to teach high school math and to coach a lot of basketball in his 30-year career. Though Coach Scriv is remembered for having coached football, baseball, and even golf, he is most widely known for his years spent coaching basketball.
Galen spent the first four years of his career teaching and coaching in Huntington, Oregon. In 1977 he accepted a position at McKenzie High School in Finn Rock, Oregon, and remained there for 27 years until retiring in 2004. What he thought would be a stepping-stone to further his career proved to be the place where his heart would learn to love the small-town charm and comfort found in knowing students, staff, and local families very well.
Upon his formal retirement in 2004, Galen and his wife, Caren, with their four young children, moved from Oregon to Yuba City, California where they became assistant pastors in a charismatic Christian church. In the years spent serving their local church and community, Coach Scriv was soon called upon to dust off his whistle and return to the basketball court. Galen coached basketball at New Life Christian School in the neighboring town of Olivehurst, California until he and his family returned to the Willamette Valley in 2012.
Galen will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Caren [Gough] Scrivner, his mother, Betty Greene, sisters Kyra (Doug) Scrivner Jones and Ina (Gary) Syphers, his six children - daughters Julie (Keith) Schneider and Amber (Jason) Dial, from his marriage to Donna Lynn Dyke, sons Cliff Scrivner and Caleb Scrivner, and daughters Corinna (Brett) Brown and Elizabeth Scrivner from his marriage to Caren Scrivner, two nieces, two nephews, and 9 grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his father Virgel Scrivner and step-father Douglas Greene.
A memorial service will also be held on January 26, 2019 at 2:00 PM at McKenzie High School, 51187 Blue River Dr. Finn Rock, OR 97488.
Should friends and family desire memorial contributions may be made to the Cascade Health through Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel at 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
