In the early hours of February 2, 2019, Raymond Leon Read passed away.

Ray was born to Clyde Raymond and AEtna (Breshears) Read on May 6, 1937 in Wallowa, Oregon. They lived on their farm on Jim Town Road. A sister, Phyllis, was born and joined the family. Some years later the family moved to La Grande, Oregon where a second sister, Kathleen, was born. Ray was adventurous. He put up a Tarzan swing, caught crawdads, and hooky bobbed. He loved cars and became a knowledgeable mechanic working in a local garage. Ray graduated from La Grande High School with the class of 1955.

Shortly after graduation Ray enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country from January 1956 to December 1960. Ray married Cherin Lay, while in the Navy they lived in San Diego. To this union four children were born, a son Tony, a daughter Sheri Rae, a twin daughter Terri Dawn who died at birth, and a son Raymond who died a toddler. After serving in the Navy the family moved to La Grande, Oregon and then to Emmett, Idaho where Ray worked for Albertson’s respectively. Ray and Cherin divorced. In 1970, Ray married Ronda Griner. Ronda and her daughter Shelley completed Ray’s family. Ray loved his family keeping them in his heart.

They moved to Stices Gulch on Dooley Mt. out of Baker City, building a home that displayed Ray’s artistry with nature. Rocks of all sizes were incorporated forming walls and other features. Ray’s creative skill with rock, wood, and nature was well known by family and friends. This property was sold, and they moved up on Stices Gulch where Ray had many friends who helped and enjoyed each other’s company in work and play. Ray was always ready to help.

Ray loved to commune with nature – feeding birds and deer, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and hiking. Family fondly remembers hikes into Bucket Lake.

Ray and Ronda divorced. Ray lived in Stices Gulch grooming and enjoying his property always welcoming visitors until his death. It was his heaven on earth.

Ray reacquainted with a friend from high school, Sylvia. Their friendship was special.

A celebration of life will be held in May 2019 in Stices Gulch.

Ray is survived by his son, Tony (Nadya) Read of Oak Harbor, Washington; daughters, Sheri Rae Read of Bellingham, Washington and Shelley (John) Dollar of Baker City, Oregon; sisters, Phyllis (Russ) Rhodig of Caldwell, Idaho and Kathleen Smith of Baker City, Oregon; grandchildren: Adam (Linsey) Putich of Edmonds, Washington; Aaron (Megan) Penrose of Bellingham, Washington; Andrew Putich of Bellingham, Washington; Allen Putich of Sedro-Woolley, Washington; Danielle (Alex) Hansen of Boise, Idaho; and Kenny (Brittany) Keister of Baker City, Oregon.
